in conversation with Diana Oberlander.

HOW DID DIANA MEET JACLYN?

We met through a friend who put us in touch knowing there were shared sensibilities, intersections and only a street between us- geographically speaking.  And from the first conversation it was clear, a friendship supported by ease and the micro communities we create in NYC—shared deli, parks and tea shop and on the macro level, an affection for travel, especially in Asia.

HOW WAS AWAVEAWAKE BORN INTO EXISTENCE?

In an exciting state of transition from one stream of life that wasn't really building up for me.  I went deeper and deeper and discovered that a clearer mission would help fuel my life’s work- that all elements would come together. And so now I find myself creating a life, with work and love and spirit all woven together. And it's just in its early stages. I think I simply allowed myself get a bit out of my own way and then the collection manifested effortlessly. And it’s all just being closer to my truth- to myself- that created it.

WHAT DOES AWAVEAWAKE MEAN?

Whatever you want it to mean. Maybe it refers to the awakening consciousness that is our nature. That collectively we are returning to a balance that we had had become disconnected from.  It’s basic, beautiful and essential to honor Mother Earth and her inhabitants.  It starts with intention- to re-find our Innocence, our connection to true Beauty.  The wave is the energy behind the change, creating with a bit more consciousness, more true love and awareness of the impact each one of our steps has on our planet. It's the big and small thing alike that create the shift and impact.

PALATE OF COLLECTION… SHADES OF SKY, MOOD

The collections evoke a time and place and a destination and naturally a character comes to be. I love the idea of the wearer tuning in to this energy and their energy creating new narratives.

COLLECTION INSPIRED BY:

            A DESTINATION-

Each season it’s a different one and this upcoming Spring 2015 collection is inspired by a place in the past and a woman who comes of age and awareness in LA in the 70s, from Bel Air to Hollywood and Malibu—the sea and canyons.

            A SONG-

“Green is the Colour” by Pink Floyd. Green is one of the most difficult colors to achieve with natural dyes but we have a shade this season--sage leaf. The song is so perfect, describing an intangible woman, wearing a dress, sunlight streaming, the time and place, timeless.

            A BOOK-

The Source: “The Untold Story of Father Yod, Yahowa 13 and the Source Family” by Isis Aquarian. I read this in late 2007 when it first came out and have had the chance to hang out with original Aquarians.  I found much inspiration from their accounts. I even went to the Source of the source and immersed myself in Kundalini Yoga practice as taught by Yogi Bhajan.

            A FILM-

La Valee Obscured by Clouds. Barbet Schroeder’s beautiful, journey into forbidden Paradise.

            A SENSORY ELEMENT-

            Night blooming Jasmine

IF YOU COULD HAVE A SHOW/PERFORMANCE ANYWHERE WHAT WOULD IT BE LIKE…

Tuileries and any kind of oasis in an urban environment

OK

SO WE KNOW NEW AGE IS ACTUALLY ANCIENT AGE… MYTH, SPIRITUALITY, THE BODY AS UNIVERSE- SO THEN WHAT IS REALLY NEW AGE…AS IT APPLIES TO THE SEMI-IMMEDIATE FUTURE?

My idea of it is a return, a renewal, finding the Self, once again, in the Cosmos and living as Authentically as possible. Integrating technology with Nature for ultimate balance. And whether plant drugs, or meditation or design furthers this vision, an embrace of the true.

WHAT DO YOU PERSONALLY DO TO NOURISH YOUR SPIRIT?

I sit under a willow tree if in New York. There's a community garden in New York's East Village that had cradled me during  heart break and groundless times. Since then I try to remember to go there, grab a stone on the way, sit and be still. A Willow tree at my first childhood home that was a dear companion, a character in my imaginings. And travel, movement, and immersion in new environments nourish me most.
